Sunkoshi Hydropower Station (Nepali: सुनकोशी जलविद्युत आयोजना) is a run-of-river hydro-electric plant located in Sindhupalchok District of Nepal. The flow from Sunkoshi River is used to generate 10.05 MW electricity. The plant is owned and developed by Government owned company, the Nepal Electricity Authority. The plant started generating electricity since 1972 ( 2051-12-06 BS). The generation licence will expire in 2101-11-30 BS, after which the plant will be handed over to the government.

The power station is connected to the national grid.

The project was built as a gift from China to Nepal.

On 2 August 2014, due to heavy rainfall, a landslide occurred at the Sunkoshi river, killing 156 people and blocking the river to form an artificial lake in Sindhupalchok District, Nepal. Araniko Highway, the main (and only) artery of goods and people flow to China, was blocked by the landslide ripping out 5 km of highway, and causing huge traffic jam. 2 dozens houses have been swept by the landslide. The landslide had a volume of 5.5 million cubic metres.

This landslide had massive effects far beyond. The dammed river was threatening to unleash a torrent of water to hundreds of downstream villages that would ravage as far as Northern India. Despite the use of dynamite, it took the Nepali Army 45 days to dig a canal through the blockage to allow water in the lake to drain. The lake created was 47 meters deep and over 400 meters long.

Repairs to Nepal’s 10-MW Sunkoshi hydropower plant estimated at more than US$2.4 million

Repairs to the Nepal Electricity Authority’s 10-MW Sunkoshi hydropower plant are estimated at about US$2.44 million following a landslide that damaged the project last August.

According to a joint statement issued by Nepalese agencies earlier this week, two of the dam’s 10 iron gates were completely destroyed by the landslide, while turbines, generators and other equipment was also affected.

Local media reported last year that the landslides blocked most of Sunkoshi Dam’s gates, leading to concern that the structure might be overtopped. Power generation resumed about 40 days after the landslide, though the plant is still operating at only about 60% of its normal capacity.

NEA said it will expedite repairs to the project in anticipation of the region’s rainy season.

The Sunkoshi hydropower project is located in Nepal’s northeastern Sindhupalchowk district. The plant was built in 1972 as a gift to Nepal from China.
